Professional Biography

Dr. Kamelia Milcheva, PhD, is a clinical hematologist with over 15 years of medical experience and particular expertise in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, hematology in pregnancy, immunohematology, hemostasis, and thrombophilia. Her clinical practice is focused on adult patients with hematological disorders and conditions requiring specialized assessment, long-term monitoring, and multidisciplinary care.

Dr. Milcheva graduated from the Medical University of Sofia in 2009. In 2010, she began her specialist training in Clinical Hematology at the Hematology Clinic of the Military Medical Academy in Sofia under the supervision of Prof. Yulian Raynov. She obtained her specialty in Clinical Hematology in 2014.

Her professional career has included extensive clinical experience in both general and specialized hematology. Between 2010 and 2017, she worked at the Hematology Clinic of the Military Medical Academy, where her professional development included specialist clinical work and increasing responsibility within the department.

Since 2018, Dr. Milcheva has worked at the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Hematological Diseases in Sofia. Since 2020, she has also served as an assistant in the Department of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, combining clinical practice with the education and training of Bulgarian and international medical students. She currently also consults patients as part of the specialist team at Nadezhda Hospital in Sofia.

A major focus of Dr. Milcheva’s professional work is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Her clinical and scientific interests include patient assessment before and after transplantation, transplant-related complications, immunological aspects of hematological treatment, and factors influencing outcomes following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

In 2024, Dr. Milcheva successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in Hematology and Blood Transfusion on early lymphocyte recovery as an independent prognostic factor for the outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with malignant hematological diseases. Her scientific work reflects her long-standing clinical involvement in stem cell transplantation and advanced hematological care.

Another important area of her practice is hematology in pregnancy. Dr. Milcheva evaluates and manages hematological conditions occurring before, during, and after pregnancy, including iron deficiency anemia, vitamin-related anemias, thrombocytopenia, disorders of hemostasis, and thrombophilia. Her approach emphasizes careful risk assessment and close interdisciplinary cooperation where required.

Her expertise also includes immunohematology, transfusion-related complications, hemostatic disorders, and modern approaches in immuno-oncology. She has undertaken advanced professional training in Hemostasis and Thrombophilia at the University of Birmingham, Immuno-Oncology through Harvard Medical School, and Efferent Therapy at a medical university in St. Petersburg.

Dr. Milcheva has completed several educational programs of the European Hematology Association, including the EHA Master Class for young hematologists in 2013–2014 and the Bite-Size Master Class in Thrombophilia in 2015. In 2017, she successfully completed the first European Hematology Examination organized by the EHA in Madrid.

Her professional achievements have been recognized with the “Young Hematologist” award in two consecutive years, 2013 and 2014, during the annual symposium accredited by the European Hematology Association.

Dr. Milcheva is a member of the Bulgarian Medical Association, the European Hematology Association, and the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. She also serves on the Board of the Bulgarian Medical Society of Hematology.

Her clinical approach combines evidence-based hematology, extensive experience in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, immunological and transfusion medicine expertise, and individualized patient care, with particular attention to complex adult hematological conditions and multidisciplinary treatment strategies.
