A New Era in Fertility Treatment: First Baby Born Using Hormone-Free Fertilo Technology

A historic medical milestone has been achieved in Peru, where the world’s first baby was born through a groundbreaking fertility method that eliminates the need for extensive hormone injections. The innovative procedure, known as Fertilo, was developed by biotech company Gameto and offers a faster, less invasive, and more natural alternative to conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Fertilo utilizes stem cell-based support cells that help immature eggs mature in the lab, mimicking natural ovarian processes without the hormonal overload typical of standard IVF. The pioneering procedure was carried out at Santa Isabel Clinic in Lima under the leadership of Dr. Luis Guzmán and resulted in the successful delivery of a healthy baby.

IVF: Progress and Limitations

Since the birth of the world’s first “test tube baby” in 1978, IVF has helped millions of families worldwide. However, traditional IVF is associated with several challenges: it’s costly, emotionally demanding, and often physically taxing due to high doses of hormones. Women can receive up to 90 injections per treatment cycle, and complications like ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) are not uncommon.

How Fertilo Works

Unlike conventional IVF, Fertilo bypasses the need for intense hormonal stimulation. Instead, it uses ovarian support cells (OSC), derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), to foster egg maturation in vitro. These OSCs replicate the egg-supporting environment of the ovary, allowing eggs to develop more naturally and reducing the burden on the patient.

According to a 2023 study, Fertilo improved both egg maturation and embryo development while reducing the number of hormone injections by up to 80% and shortening the treatment cycle to just three days. This significantly reduces physical strain and lowers the risk of side effects.

First Baby Born and What’s Next

The baby’s mother, following a successful Fertilo procedure, shared her gratitude:
“This was a much gentler and safer process for me. I felt reassured knowing I didn’t need to endure dozens of hormone injections or harsh procedures.”

The Fertilo technology has already received regulatory approval in Australia, Japan, Argentina, Paraguay, Mexico, and Peru, and is now preparing to enter Phase III clinical trials in the United States. If successful, this could make the technology available to a wider population seeking safer and more accessible fertility solutions.
