Multilineage-Differentiating Stress-Enduring Cells (Muse Cells): An Easily Accessible, Pluripotent Stem Cell Niche with Unique and Powerful Properties for Multiple Regenerative Medicine Applications

The work was conducted by researchers at the Department of Neuroscience, Biomedicine, and Movement Sciences, University of Verona, Italy. Corresponding author: Riccardo Ossanna.

What Was Studied

The authors synthesized existing data on Muse (Multilineage-differentiating Stress-Enduring) cells and their potential applications in regenerative medicine. The search was conducted in PubMed for publications up to December 2022 using the PRISMA methodology; the final review included studies on the characteristics of Muse cells and their applications in various pathological conditions.

The authors pay particular attention to several properties of Muse cells: their ability to differentiate into cells belonging to all three germ layers; their resistance to stress; their migration to damaged tissues; potential immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects; and the absence of teratoma formation in the described preclinical models. The review examines studies of Muse cells in injuries to the brain, heart, liver, lungs, skin, intestines, cornea, bone and cartilage, and other organs.
